The shooting down of flight MH17 with a Russian-made missile, supplied by Russian officers to Ukrainian rebels, should be the final outrage in Putin's onslaught against Ukraine. Europe now needs to take the strongest forms of action, beyond economic sanctions: it is time for a meeting of NATO to consider landing forces to take over the rebel-held areas in Eastern Ukraine to end this travesty. If we do not act quickly, Putin is likely to send his own army into the separatist-held eastern regions of Ukraine on the pretext that this is needed to control the crash site area. He already has his officers operating there without uniforms or official acknowledgement, which is a war crime. If the West does not stand up to Putin after this outrage, he will be further emboldened to new atrocities.
