Assyrians are the last speakers of what once was the lingua franca of the Near East and the language of Jesus: Aramaic.
They are nearly a majority in the Nineveh Plains region of northern Iraq. There have been calls for the establishment of a 4,200 km^2 safe-haven for them there.
