Currently, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug alongside heroin and LSD and heroin and above drugs such as oxycodone, morphine, and opium. The definition that the FDA gives to Schedule I drugs is:
"Substances in this schedule have no currently accepted medical use in the United States, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse."
Studies have shown marijuana may be less addictive than the currently legal commercial drugs: tobacco and alcohol. Other studies have shown marijuana may also have valid medical uses such as treating HIV, Alzheimer's, seizures, and some mental disorders. For these reasons, I believe that the FDA needs to be called to reevaluate its's current drug schedule for marijuana.
