The deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, and the subsequent non-indictments of the police officers involved in their deaths, have highlighted the inherent conflict of interest that comes with prosecuting attorneys who work daily with police departments being in charge of prosecuting cases of police misconduct against these departments. Even if the non-indictments were just, this relationship brews mistrust. If we cannot trust our legal system, that is a problem.
We realize that the President does not have the authority to change state laws. What he does have the power to do is to call a meeting of the Governors of the 50 states to discuss the pros and cons of bringing in special prosecutors to try these cases. This petition is a call for such a meeting.
