In the 1990's the idea of a national ID card was demonized. But in the current decade it seems that it is becoming more and more of a necessity. As states pass a variety of restrictions on what is required to vote, even in national elections, it seems the federal government is required to step in to guarantee the rights of all citizens. This ID could potentially serve a number of functions including voter ID, serving as a passport card, and if the Federal and State governments chose to work together it could double as a driver's license or conceal and carry license.
