Currently in the U.S., there is no third gender option on identity documents such as passports, birth certificates, drivers licenses, etc. People who identify as non-binary or genderqueer have no choice but to select a gender that does not correspond with how they identify. It is time for President Obama and the U.S. Government to not only acknowledge the existence of non-binary and genderqueer people, but to also legally recognize their gender identity and protect them from unjust discrimination.
