Enhancement of sentences of non-violent drug offenders is causing Civil and Criminal Rights violations. Violations of cruel and unusual punishment (8th Amendment) and racial discrimination (Civil Rights Act of 1964) due to 90% of offenders affected are Black and Hispanic.
The sentence enhancement method has roots in the failed “War on Drugs”.
It automatically increases offender sentences and usually doubles time allowed by regular law. Statistics show this practice does not deter offenses; has increased return offender rate across the country. They become institutionalized.
The effect on families and communities is clear, more single parent homes, high school dropouts and high crime. We demand sentence enhancement stop; and all currently under it have there sentences reduced
