I am a Canadian living in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. I have a Firearm License for both Possession & Acquisition of both Unrestricted (Rifles) & Restricted (Handguns). I had to write a separate exam with separate practial testing. Then I had to have a background check. In my case this took 8-months as when the RCMP did the background check it set up a Red Flag as I had been in the Israeli Military in a Paratroup Commando Unit. When I purchased the Hand Gun it was necessary to fax the local Firearm Officer to receive an authorisation to move the Gun from the Gun Shop to my house. I am permitted to only take the Hand Gun from my house to & from the firing range. In Canada a Firearm License is required to purchase ammunition. Just this alone would be a great step in the right direction.
