The Helium Privatization Act of 1996 created artificially low prices for helium. Without action this resource may become scarce, which would impact scientific and strategic interests of the United States.
Due to its unique physical and chemical properties, helium is used in:
* medical devices (MRI)
* fiber optics and semiconductors (computers)
* space exploration and defense (rockets)
* high-energy accelerators
* etc.
Helium is a non-renewable resource which has to be mined. Its demand has surged since 1996. Lack of action may result in the US having to import it, creating a dependence on Russia and the Middle East.
We ask the administration to educate lawmakers and the public on the importance of helium, and work towards a new policy that adheres to long term US strategic interests.
