As a result of the ongoing nuclear disaster in Japan, we believe that it would show great foresight if we ceased pursuing the use of nuclear power to solve our future energy demands. The US has resisted the temptation to license any new reactors since the Three Mile Island accident in the 70s and it does not seem they have been needed throughout the past four decades. After the Chernobyl incident, which has resulted in a permanent uninhabitable region, we can expect a similar result from the Japanese accident. These accidents, while tragic, do not reflect the worst case scenario of potential accidents at nuclear reactors. Unfortunately, we cannot adequately predict the longterm effects of these accidents or ones that are more severe. Adhere to the Precautionary Principle in this case.
