Civilians' property can be taken from them, even if they're not convicted of a crime. This has very serious implications for our system of justice, and is nowhere near the "innocent until proven guilty" standard we all hope would be applied to us. The practice of civil asset forfeiture, according to the New York Times, has become "a staple of Law enforcement agencies because it helps finance their work."
Please sign this petition to ask the United States Department of Justice, as well as local police agencies, to pledge to cease all civil asset forfeiture practices prior to conviction, and to end training programs centered around "how to get the best stuff for your department."
If this petition is successful, We hope Congress takes steps to change this law from suspicion to conviction,
