In 1934, President Roosevelt signed into law The Hayden Cartwright Act, 4 USC, Section 104. It's goal was to stabilize highway building with Federal and State funds by insuring a work program of far-reaching proportions and benefits. It established the legal basis for the federal government and state governments to collect a gas tax for the maintenance of public road systems. This included their ability to impose their gas tax on the military and other federal reservations. Since then, there exists many court cases that established precedant that specifically excluded Indian Reservations from being required to pay such taxes.
This petition is an effort for immediate public support and traction in Congress to support action to repeal this tax.
