The federal government spends millions of dollars each year minting pennies. The purchasing power of a penny is less than that of a nickel ten years ago. Today's consumer who rounds a purchase price up to a higher nickel is no worse off than the consumer of 2002 who rounded a purchase price up to a higher whole cent.
