Cease recognition of Columbus Day as a federal holiday.

Created by L.M. on January 22, 2013

Though we are taught growing up that Christopher Columbus was a heroic adventurer ahead of his time, the truth is that he was responsible for the gruesome murder, rape, and enslavement of countless innocent native Caribbean people. Columbus and his men massacred many villages- no men, women, or children spared, and severed natives' hands and practiced other forms of cruel and unusual torture. Even when his actions are put into historical context, they can still be seen as radical; he demolished an entire way of life he saw as inferior and worthless in a greedy and arrogant pursuit of fame and fortune, and there should not be a federal holiday recognizing him as an admirable man.
