The U.S. government has subsidized the gas and oil industry for years. Rather than the country reaping any rewards for the handout, the gas industry has manipulated the market to increase gas prices to astronomical levels. This has hurt the economy in innumerable ways -- limiting discretionary income and raising prices for any goods shipped anywhere in the country. It has also led to job loss, especially within the trucking industry. All subsidies for the gas industry should cease when gas prices are over $2.50 a gallon. If we don't hurt them in the pocketbook, nothing is going to change, and our economy will continue to suffer.
