"Labour Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work (...) for recreation and (...) for rest. For many countries, Labour Day is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers' Day, which occurs on May 1st.
The Labor Day celebration was fixed September 1st because Grover Cleveland thought May 1 was too close to the date of the Haymarket Massacre (May 4).
But the practice of negotiating the dates of Federal Holidays around our fears is outdated & irrelevant.
For Example, Riots occuring in this country every day on Black Friday - yet no one has proposed to change the date of either the Thanksgiving or Christmas Holidays!
