Social Security started in 1935 and the laws have not changed in 80 years. One of the laws is the 5 month waiting period to start getting benefits. For those who fall in the Compassionate Allowance category still have to wait. This is not by any means Compassionate. Once someone gets approved the benefits need to start immediately. The disabled are either terminal or permanently disabled. My husband, 59 years old was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. Worked for 42 years and paid in SS. He was approved 9 weeks after diagnosis. Now we have to wait a total of 7 months before he gets his benefits. He was the only provider for our family. We have a 4 yr old. There's no other income. If SS could remove this wait period it would allow us to concentrate on his health, not bills.
