change agricultural subsidies to promote healthy foods instead of industrialized commodity crops

Created by P.V. on May 20, 2012

We implore the Obama administration to demand that Congress restructure the agricultural subsidy system to gradually shift funding away from corn, soy, and other industrialized commodity crops. Our current policy costs taxpayers billions of dollars, artificially lowers the prices of unhealthy foods such as corn-fed meat, processed carbohydrates, and high fructose corn syrup, and actively contributes to growing rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other serious medical conditions that have caused healthcare expenses to skyrocket. While we understand that these subsidies are institutionalized and are backed by very strong industrial interests, it is in the best interest of the country to gradually change the system to promote healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
