There are more than 1,100 federal programs and benefits associated with a legal marriage. Some of these programs rely on the “place of celebration” to determine federal recognition. We need to ask the Obama Administration to change and revise as many federal programs as can be done to the place of celebration standard. They have authority to do this. We also need to get Congress to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which would correct a handful of federal programs, such as Social Security, which rely on the problematic place of domicile standard.
