As many people have highlighted the horrific crimes against humanity perpetrated by Christopher Columbus, it seems a day honoring him and his dubious discoveries is outdated and shortsighted. Instead, it is proposed that by Executive Order or Act of Congress (as required) that the federal holiday 'Columbus Day' by hereby changed to 'Cultural Remembrance and Reflection Day'. This day would be instead heralded as a chance for all to warmly and openly share the culture and historical discoveries, and to celebrate the achievements that have brought us together across cultures. This would replace the current symbol of Christopher Columbus, who is regarded by many not to be bringer of peace and diplomacy but genocide, imperialism, racism, and cultural and historical destruction.
