Change Columbus' Day to Explorer's Day.

In 1937, Columbus' Day was recognized as a national holiday to celebrate the landing of Columbus in the new world. It cannot be denied that Columbus was an abnormally intrepid explorer and without his journey to the new world, history would have been utterly altered. In modern times, however, we recognize that other explorers reached the new world before Columbus and thus that achievement was not unique. Additionally, Columbus' and other settlers of the new world caused much suffering and mistreatment of the indigenous people of America, and to them a celebration of Columbus is akin to celebration of the darkest day in their history. Therefore, we petition that Columbus Day be rebranded as Explorer's Day so that all explorers and the very spirit of exploration can be celebrated by all.
