“Columbus Day” was made a federal holiday in 1934, when Native American nations had little voice to protest the celebration of the onset of colonization and genocide in the Western Hemisphere.
In its place, proclaim that fateful date of the onset of colonialism as a Day of Solidarity and Mourning with the Indigenous Peoples.
The history of the Americas has been distorted and dismissive of Indigenous Peoples. We denounce the celebration of conquest, colonization and the slave trade- the true legacy of Christopher Columbus. We propose to replace the recognition of Christopher Columbus, a man who played a pivotal role in the worst genocide the world has ever known, and instead, celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. This is about teaching our children to take a stand against racism.
