The continued recognition of Columbus Day, the celebration of a figure who plundered, murdered, and divided his way on to this continent is a national disgrace. The brutal, unforgiving, and genocidal campaigns waged by Columbus and others inspired by his acts are not something this nation should celebrate. In recognition of the immense suffering endured by native peoples at the hands of Christopher Columbus and other European explorers, we propose an Indigenous Peoples' Day to both mourn this devastation and celebrate that Native people mustered the strength to endure these onslaughts and survive to this day. Our children must know the truth, and we must not encourage them to celebrate a genocidal monster.
