Christopher Columbus wasn't even the first one to discover America. Leiff Erikson was. Spongebob references aside, I believe that in order to rightly honor the first one to discover the Americas on behalf of Europe, it is only right that we honor Leiff Erikson instead of Columbus. Additionally, it'll save us a lot of headaches on Columbus's long civil rights violations as long as my arm (probably longer).
Leiff Erikson never enslaved any Native Americans, Leiff Erikson never poached on sacred land. He stayed for a few years and left.
