Federal law dictates certain workers are exempt from being paid overtime. A company trying to hit a deadline can request their staff stay late to finish a project, often requiring 60+ hour weeks without additional pay. The law should be changed to remove sweeping overtime exemptions. Limit the exemption to only the first 5 hours of overtime, giving the company some leeway. Anything over 45 hours a week should result in overtime getting paid. This puts more money in the pockets of the workers and may result in the company hiring more employees instead of forcing extra hours on the current ones. I believe that this change would help the economy, spur job growth, and for some workers, restore some kind of sane work/life balance.
