This petition aims to get changes to the current student loan interest deduction limits, both the maximum $2,500 yearly limit as well as the income levels when these deductions are no longer available. As the tax code currently is, all individuals with student loan debt are treated like they have the same debt burden... For example, if you have total student loan debt of $10,000 but make under $120,000 you can deduct up to $2,500 in interest but if you have $400,000 in total student loan debt and make over $120,000 then you can't deduct any of the interest paid. The law is outdated to when education costs were much lower, and you shouldn't be unable to deduct this interest just because you invested more in school to pursue a higher degree of education.
