The US motto was officially changed by Eisenhower to "In God We Trust" as the Cold War started come into effect. "In God We Trust" is an inherently religious statement, ignoring the separation of church and state. Though Christians remain the largest religious group in America, a large and growing number of citizens are of a different religion or of no religion at all, and seeing "In Got We Trust" on money and in court houses and government buildings can be more than a little uncomfortable.
