The Federal Government lists five "schedules" of drugs, with the most dangerous in Schedule I, and the least in Schedule V. Schedule I drugs have "no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States. Cannabis remains a Schedule I drug even though extensive research has illustrated that the plant serves over a dozen pertinent medical applications. As of 2016, more than 50% of states have legalized the use of medical marijuana. Research and the majority of states affirm that there is, without question, currently accepted medical use for cannabis. Why does scheduling matter? Though it varies between states, incarceration is a common consequence when found guilty of possessing a Schedule I drug whereas the penalties of lower scheduled drugs are far less severe such as fines
