It has been reported by the press that in the last US presidential election the two candidates for Republican and Democrat parties spent about $1 billion in advertising. It is very costly to run for federal elected office, primarily due to advertising on television. This limits the number of Americans that can compete for a federal elected office position and fosters an environment of influence buying by a variety of donors to funding these campaigns. The playing field could be leveled by barring commercial ads on TV by those candidates for federal elected positions. Instead, create a free government run TV station available in all markets governed by a group of volunteer citizens that would give access to all citizens that want to run for a federal elected position.
