change the federal pay system to be an example for pay equality rather than perpetuate income inequality

Created by B.C. on January 26, 2015

Currently Federal employees are given an annual cost of living increase based on a percentage of their current income. This has the effect of widening the gap between the highest and lowest earners within the government. For example, a GS-7 makes $39,570 in 2015 and a GS-15 makes $116,021. Assuming a 2% raise every year for 30 years a GS-7 would make $71,676 while a GS-15 would make $210,156. This gives the GS-7 a wage increase of $32,106 and a GS-15 an increase of $94,135, thus perpetuating income inequality. I propose changing the methodology for pay increase from a percentage to a level used equally for all employees. When the President announces a 1% increase the total amount of money should be calculated and divided equally among employees, rather than favoring the top.
