The current law states the a Grey Market Vehicle that is 25 years or newer cannot be imported inside the United States for personal use. We are petitioning to change the exemption from DOT/EPA regulations to 15 years or older. Our neighbor Canada currently has this policy, and the United States policy was the product of lobbying from manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz. The NHTSA defines a vehicle 25 years or older as a collector car, but most automotive enthusiasts would consider these semi-exotic vehicles to have collector value, as they were not sold here in the States. Another major point is the fact that the Department of Homeland Security spends far too much time hunting down and seizing these vehicles when they should be focusing our precious resources on securing our country.
