The Pakistanis complain that drone strikes in their territory are a violation of sovereignty, and they are absolutely correct. The president is surely aware that there are terrorists taking refuge on US soil. If a foreign power were to identify and locate such terrorists, would the president condone that foreign power using drones to attack the terrorists here without the cooperation of US intelligence and armed forces? Of course not.
The drone war is a measure taken for reasons of expedience, and its long-term implications have not been properly assessed. The fact that the campaign has been disavowed and kept "secret" to the extent possible is evidence that the government knows it to be morally questionable.
It is time to review and change this policy.
