Change Medical Debt Collection Policies at the Department of Veterans Affairs; Stop Punishing Veterans with Debt

Created by B.G. on January 30, 2014

The way that the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) collects medical debts from veterans is unacceptable. Currently, any money paid towards medical debt is applied to the oldest invoice first & each new invoice continues to age until it passes the 90 day mark. The veteran must submit a new repayment form with 3+ pages of financial data every 90 days to stop the DVA from initiating collection procedures & confiscating the total disability payment the veteran receives, plus up to 20% of any federal monies the veteran is receiving such as Social Security Disability Insurance. Please change the system so that payments are applied to the newest invoices first and excess money is applied to older debt and financial information is submitted once per year, unless a substantial increase occurs.
