Gorgona island, an isolated refuge for monks for 1,500 years and a penal colony since 1869, has 40 inmates tending a vineyard, producing high quality pork, vegetables, chickens, olive oil and cheese.

Changing the mission at Guantanamo from a prison to a prisoner farm will take years, if not decades, but that time can be a transition for our country as well. We need to move away from policies of retaliation to those of reconnecting with each other, on a common ground. We need to invest in rebuilding hope on both sides. Prisons harden jailors too.
