The motto of the United States should be changed back to its traditional motto "E pluribus unum", which is Latin for "Out of many, one". This motto embodies the history and present of the United States better than the current motto "In God we trust".
"In God we trust" was not the motto of the United States until 1956 and was changed to that in order to establish a difference between the democratic United States and the communist Soviet Union during the Cold War. Today, the United States has great relations with Russia and even with some communist nations so this differentiation is unnecessary.
"E pluribus unum" celebrates both the diversity and nationalism of the United States. For a country with no religious affiliation, "In God we trust" challenges separation between church and state.
