Columbus is often revered as the hero who discovered America. However, Columbus was neither a hero nor is he responsible for the discovery of America.
While it is true that Columbus voyage marked a new era of colonization and conquest of the Americas, other Europeans before Columbus' time had set foot on the American continents. Moreover, Columbus is responsible for a plethora of atrocious and disturbing acts in his interaction with the native people of the Americas, including rape, murder, enslavement, and thievery. He is not a very good role model for our children today.
As such, we propose the name of Columbus Day be changed to New World Day, in order to celebrate the discovery of the new world and all the people involved, but to no longer revere the name of a truly despicable man.
