The FBI's COunter INTELligence PROgram was a series of covert, illegal projects aiming to destroy peaceful domestic political movements. The brainchild/pet project of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, COINTELPRO's purpose was to discredit, neutralize or otherwise eliminate the activities/leadership of various groups, including the NAACP, the American Indian Movement, nationalist groups seeking Puerto Rican independence, women's rights advocacy groups, and Students for a Democratic Society, among others. COINTELPRO, its mission and goals were unconstitutional. J. Edgar Hoover's legacy deserves censure and derision, not honor.
