President Obama recently renamed Mount McKinley to Mount Denali to honor and recognize the Inuit traditions of Alaska. We ask that President Obama honor the traditions and heritage of the Ojibwe by consulting with scholars and tribal authorities to agree upon an official English spelling and to rename Lake Superior to its original Ojibwe name of Gichi-Gami (or similar spelling).
All of the Great Lakes have a name derived somehow from local native words except for Superior which still carries the name given by French explorers. The Ojibwe have been the overwhelming native population of the Lake Superior Basin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for centuries and continue to be to this day.
Gichi-Gami has been popularized by the "Song of Hiawatha" and the "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".
