Since 2001, September 11th has been dubbed "Patriot Day" by our federal government - in immediate reaction to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington D.C.
In the 13 years since, the word "Patriot" has taken on dubious meaning in our culture. Using it to describe a national day of mourning seems to water down its significance in our current chapter of American History.
The undersigned urge President Barack Obama to consider changing September 11th's name to "Remembrance Day", which we feel better recognizes the efforts and sacrifice of victims and others directly affected on 9/11/2001, including passengers on United Flight 93; NYPD, NYFD, and Port Authority first responders; and survivors of the attacks who today deal lingering health issues.
