The renaming of Washington National Airport was the outcome of a concerted effort by political conservatives and their allies in Congress to promote President Reagan's political views by naming buildings, highways, and other public property in his honor. The legislation to name National Airport after Reagan, signed by President Clinton in 1998, was strongly opposed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and other area political leaders. The original name of the airport -- Washington National Airport -- should be restored.
