At the present time, 10 military bases in the United States are named in honor of Confederate veterans. These Confederates, far from being honorable, committed treason by choosing to fight against the United States; in many cases, violated oaths they had taken when members of the US military; fought to continue and defend the enslavement of human beings; and in some cases went on to help found the Ku Klux Klan and similar racist organizations. Thousands of African Americans serve in the US military, and should not be subjected to the painful memories created by serving on bases named for those who fought to keep them enslaved. The Confederate States of America was an enemy of the United States. It makes no sense to honor its military leaders by naming American bases after them.
