The new school lunch program does not work. It requires a whole grain, protein, fat-free or low fat milk, fruits, or vegetables. Students must choose either a fruit or vegetable, but don't have to take two of the items. This has resulted in lunches that are barely edible. For example, a qualifying lunch could be a piece of greasy pizza and a milk, as the pizza would count as the protein and vegetable (the sauce) and the milk would count as itself. This is one of the more appetizing possibilities. Often lunches are composed of a chicken patty on a small wheat bun with an apple and a skim milk. Kids are throwing away their lunch and the 100 calorie snacks do not provide enough energy for students. 1,000,000 students are projected to stop buying the lunches, which loses money for schools.
