In 1956, in response to Soviet Russia's decree that there could be no religion there, the US adopted the motto "In God We Trust" to indicate the difference between the US and USSR.
We the undersigned believe that this motto runs counter to the ideals of religious freedom in the US.
Instead, we propose the motto be changed to "Believe in Freedom".
We feel this motto more accurately serves the purpose that Congress intended in 1956. The US is a place where religion can be practiced or not at a citizen's choice.
The motto has two meanings: first, that freedom is something to have faith in. Second, that our citizens should have the freedom to believe as they want to without government decree.
Please join us in putting forth "Believe in Freedom" as the motto of our great nation.
