"In God we trust" was adopted as the official motto of the United States in 1956 replacing "E pluribus unum", adopted when the Great Seal of the United States was created and adopted in 1782. This was in direct violation of the first amendment of the U.S. constitution which states,
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."
In Everson v. Board of Education, 330 U.S. 1 (1947), the U.S. Supreme Court concluded:
"The 'establishment of religion' clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church. Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions or prefer one religion over another...That wall must be kept high and impregnable."
