Currently, there are over 121,000 people waiting for an organ donation in the U.S. Our system works against them, and most will die waiting. This system is inherently wrong. We need to change how we are managing organ donation and transplantation in this country from assuming that someone would not want to be a donor, to assuming that they want to be a donor.
It is understandable that a person's beliefs may preclude their wanting to donate. However, almost all major religions allow organ donation and receipt. By changing to a system that allows for people to opt-out of being a donor (and in turn, realizing that they also will not be able to receive an organ or tissue donation), we can change the wait to nearly zero.
Please help to ensure that those who need an organ donation receive one.
