With our current "First Past the Post" voting system, people who identify with third-party or independent candidates find themselves unable to vote for them because, while they technically have the right to vote for such candidates, they fear they will be throwing away their vote. People end up voting for either of the two main (Dem and G.O.P.) candidates, although they don't fully identify with either
With Alternative Voting, people can confidently vote for the candidate of their choice, knowing their vote won't be wasted. Alternative Voting also destroys the need for primaries and the existence of "spoilers" (less-popular candidates stealing votes from main candidates). This will step us toward true democracy
