According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in the 2007-2008 school year, 36.2% of first year college students took remedial courses. If the public high school system were changed to better prepare students, less time and money would be wasted teaching these students the same information twice. The public education system in Massachusetts (MassCore) has been ranked number 1 in the country for several years by the American Legislative Council's Report Card on Education. As such, it would make sense to use it as a model for public school reform across the nation. Regardless of how it comes about, change is needed in the public school system.
