Couples who have a stay at home spouse should be required to match the social security deduction for the stay at home spouse. That alone will stabilize and fix the system. The stay at home spouse needs to be provided for. The deduction should be pulled from the income tax return or they should be given payment coupons to pay it for the following year. Those that are poverty level and below do not pay. However, those not in poverty should absolutely be required to pay social security for the under retirement age spouse that chooses not to work. They deserve provision and the public deserves not to be ripped off. I am 58, divorced after 35 years of marriage and my spouse has 2 retirements and full social security. I have nothing because the legal system does not protect the poor.
