Change the tax code to remove the $2,500 cap on the student loan interest deduction.

Created by J.H. on January 24, 2013

Every year I hear about how my friends that own homes are receiving huge tax refunds due to their mortgage interest deduction.

Meanwhile, the tax benefit of the thousands of dollars in interest I'm paying on my student loans is limited to $2,500. I realize that they are different kinds of deductions-mortgage interest is an itemized deduction and student loan interest reduces your taxable income, but I think it's unfair that we cannot either raise the cap or eliminate it altogether.

My student loans, consolidated through the federal government, are at an interest rate of 8%. That is double what people can get mortgages for right now! This is a common sense proposal that would yield benefits to the whole economy.
