Change the title of Columbus Day to honor the true founder of the New World, Leif Erikson.

Created by K.L. on May 16, 2015

Hello,

I have created this petition to give correct credit to the first Europeans who reached North America. It belongs to the Icelandic Captain Leif Erikson and the Norse. Leif Erikson and his crew made landfall in what is now Newfoundland five centuries before Columbus.

I understand that he did not land in what is now the United States, but we celebrate Columbus Day for his discovery of the Americas as a whole. I propose that we rename Columbus Day to "Viking's Day," "Erikson's Day," or "Norse's Day."

We should put it on the same date due to the uncertainty of the day of Leif's discovery

It's an injustice to allow Columbus to have this honor. It belongs to Erikson and his crew. It belongs to the rightful explorers, and that is Erikson and the Vikings. Not Columbus.
